What is Mobile Number Portability (MNP)?

When and where did the MNP service first appear?

Hong Kong (1995) was the pioneer in this area, followed by Singapore (1997). However, in the second case, not everything turned out as desired—the transfer was realized only for voice calls and SMS. In all other cases, it was necessary to use the network of the old operator. MNP was fully implemented only in 2008.

But in the Netherlands, in 1997, they managed to launch everything at once. At the same time, the British began preparations for the introduction of the service. Although the service was free in the UK, some operators charged a certain amount for number registration. The minus was that in both countries the porting procedure lasted about 2 months. Over time, this drawback was eliminated. Today in the UK it is possible to change the operator, leaving the same number behind, almost instantly.

Now the MNP service is implemented in more than 70 countries of the world.

Why MNP service is needed?

As international experience shows, the introduction of the service increases competition for subscribers. Turkey is a very good example in this regard.

Before the implementation of mobile number portability, there was a monopoly in the country - the power was taken over by the mobile operator Turkcell. Here were the highest tariffs for mobile communication in Europe exactly until two other mobile communication providers (Vodafone and Avea) implemented MNP. For the first time in the world practice, the service was initiated and sponsored not by the state. As a result, in 4 years these two mobile operators have won back a solid number of subscribers. As of 2012, Vodafone's customer base amounted to 18.3 million people, Avea - 12.8 million.
